About Stress Fractures

What is it and what are my treatment options?

Stress Fracture Overview

Foot and ankle stress fractures are tiny bone cracks caused by overuse. Symptoms may make it hard to run, walk or even stand. An appointment with a Carolina Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates’ (CONA) foot and ankle specialist should be made as soon as possible for maximum symptom relief.

Symptoms & Causes

Ankle and foot stress fracture symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness

Athletes, active individuals and persons who are overweight or obese have the highest stress fracture risk. Common causes include:

  • Improper Footwear
  • Increases in physical activity volume or intensity
  • Poor technique
  • Surface changes

Common Treatments:

Nonsurgical treatment options treat foot and ankle stress fractures. After a thorough evaluation, a CONA foot and ankle specialist may recommend:

  • A decrease in physical activity volume or intensity
  • A walking boot
  • Immobilization
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
  • Rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE)
  • Shoe changes

Surgery is not a foot and ankle stress fracture treatment option.
