About Rheumatoid Arthritis

What is it and what are my treatment options?

Rheumatoid Arthritis Overview

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder where the body mounts an immune attack on joint bone and cartilage. Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms can make it hard to perform many day-to-day movements without pain. Patients are encouraged to make an appointment with a Carolina Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates’ (CONA) specialist as soon as symptoms present. Early treatment decreases symptoms and prevents rheumatoid arthritis from becoming worse.

Symptoms & Causes

Rheumatoid arthritis symptoms include:

  • pain
  • stiffness
  • swelling
  • tenderness

Symptoms present in the affected joint. Fatigue, fever and weight loss may also occur.

The cause of rheumatoid arthritis is not unknown. Known risk factors include:

  • Age (40-60)
  • Family history
  • Gender (women)
  • Obesity
  • Tobacco use

Common Treatments:

Nonsurgical treatment options treat the majority of rheumatoid arthritis cases. After a thorough consultation, a CONA specialist may recommend:

  • Corticosteroids
  • Disease-modifying rheumatic drugs (DMARDs)
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physical therapy

Surgery may be recommended to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis that does not respond to nonsurgical treatment. A CONA specialist restores joint anatomy and function during surgery.
