About Pathological Spine Fractures

What is it and what are my treatment options?

Pathological Spine Fracture Overview

A pathological spine fracture is a spine fracture that is caused by a disease rather than an accident or injury. After a thorough evaluation, a Carolina Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates’ (CONA) spine specialist diagnoses the disease responsible for a pathological spine fracture and prescribes an appropriate treatment plan.

Symptoms & Causes

Pathological spine fracture symptoms include:

  • Spine pain
  • Extremity pain
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness

Common pathological spine fracture causes are:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Osteomalacia
  • Paget’s disease
  • Tumors

Common Treatments:

Nonsurgical treatment options are recommended first. After a thorough evaluation, a CONA spine specialist may recommend:

  • A brace
  • Calcium and vitamin D supplements
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs)
  • Pain medications
  • Rest

A vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty may be recommended to treat pathological spine fractures that do not improve after nonsurgical treatment. The minimally invasive procedures restore lost vertebral height and stabilize the fracture.

Make an Appointment
with A Spine Specialist

Please make an appointment with a CONA spine specialist if you experience pathological spine fracture symptoms. Delaying a diagnosis can make your symptoms and the disease-causing them worse.
