Orthopaedic Associates, PA and Upstate Spine and Neurosurgery Center, PC announce merger and plans for an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC)
(SPARTANBURG, SC, JULY 21, 2016) Orthopaedic Associates, PA and Upstate Spine and Neurosurgery Center, PC announce merger and plans for an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). The physicians of the newly-formed practice, Carolina Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates (CONA), will offer the most advanced training and experience in orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery and pain management in an ASC setting. CONA will allow the physicians to provide a wider range of services, deliver a higher quality of care to their patients, operate more efficiently and better meet patient needs in this age of healthcare reform.
“Our patients will benefit greatly from this specialized ASC as the physicians and the center will be dedicated to only specific orthopaedic and spine procedures,” said Dr. Michael Hoenig of Orthopaedic Associates, PA. “This is obviously different from hospitals where a patient’s health and the complexity of the procedure requires a hospital stay,” said Dr. Phillip Esce of Upstate Spine & Neurosurgery Center.
The new 15,280 square-foot facility will be located on the North Grove Medical Park campus and will bring a minimum of 25 new jobs. The estimated cost of the project is $7.2 million. Pending DHEC approval, the groundbreaking of the new facility will be held in the spring of 2017, with an estimated completion during the spring of 2018.
Procedures that will be performed in this surgery center include: total and partial knee and hip replacements; neck fusions; lumbar fusions and other spine procedures. In addition, these traditional orthopaedic procedures will be performed: shoulder, knee scopes, hand surgery and fractures.
Additional Benefits of the New Ambulatory Surgery Center
Due to recent advances in technology in the surgical fields and anesthesiology, many procedures once deemed only able to be performed in an inpatient setting are now being performed safely and with great patient satisfaction in an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) as an outpatient procedure or with a 23-hour stay. There are many places throughout the country that are performing such joint replacements and spine procedures in an ASC setting, yet very few are located in SC. This would be the first ASC in Spartanburg offering both joint replacement and spine procedures.
New technology, new techniques and patient requests are driving the change for more complex joint and spine cases to an ASC setting. In addition, payers often demand that these procedures be done in the most cost-effective setting, which is in an ASC. Orthopaedic Associates, PA and Upstate Spine & Neurosurgical Center, PC would like to be at the forefront of offering these elective surgeries to patients in an ASC environment, at ASC convenience, and at ASC cost, which is a fraction of the cost for the same procedure performed in a hospital setting, even when done as an outpatient procedure. The ASC will provide lower cost options for patients and these options can save patients thousands of dollars. If these procedures are not available at ASC rates locally, patients will be incentivized to travel elsewhere, such as Greenville and Charlotte, to obtain these services.
Our physicians will utilize our own ASC to provide these specialized services to our patients. A 100 percent physician-owned ASC will provide better control of cost, quality and scheduling. In addition, the ASC will allow physicians to offer first-class quality care in our own backyard keeping our community patients from having to travel for these specialty procedures.
