About Hip Labrum Tears

What is it and what are my treatment options?

Hip Labrum Tear Overview

The hip labrum is a rim of soft tissue that surrounds the pelvic acetabulum and acts like a gasket to hold the femoral head in an anatomical position. A torn hip labrum causes hip joint instability and possibly hip joint subluxation or dislocation. An appointment with a Carolina Orthopaedic and Neurosurgical Associates (CONA) hip specialist should be made when an accident or injury occurs and hip labrum tear symptoms present. If left untreated, it could lead to more serious issues that would involve orthopedic hip surgery.

Symptoms & Causes:

Some hip labrum tears may not cause symptoms. Others may cause any of the following:

  • Clicking, popping, locking or catching sensation
  • Decreased range of motion
  • Groin pain
  • Hip pain
  • Stiffness

Moderate and larger hip labrum tears usually cause more severe symptoms than small tears and increase subluxation and dislocation risk.

Hip labrum tear causes include:

  • Anatomical abnormalities
  • Contact sports injuries
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Overuse

Osteoarthritis damages hip bone and cartilage and increase hip labrum tear risk.

Common Treatments:

Nonsurgical treatment options treat small tears and some moderate tears. After a thorough evaluation, a CONA specialist may recommend:

  • Activity modification
  • An assistive device (crutches, cane, walker)
  • Injections
  • Immobilization
  • Pain and anti-inflammatory medications
  • Physical therapy

Some moderate tears and large tears may require minimally invasive surgical intervention. During hip arthroscopy, a CONA hip specialist locates the tear and uses anchors to attach it to the bone and sutures to repair it.

Diagnosis:

An accurate diagnosis is the first step toward symptom relief. A CONA hip specialist:

  • Obtains a complete accident/injury report
  • Reviews medical history and previous injuries
  • Performs a physical examination
  • Orders and analyzes medical imaging studies (x-rays, an MRI and CT-scan)

The tear is diagnosed, severity is determined and an appropriate treatment plan is prescribed.

Make an Appointment
with A Hip Specialist

Make an appointment with a CONA specialist if you are involved in an accident or sustain an injury and experience hip labrum tear symptoms. Delaying a diagnosis may make the hip labrum tear and associated symptoms worse.
