James Behr, MD

As both a pain management and a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist, Dr. Behr focuses on treating each patient as an individual restoring quality of life and improving function through multidisciplinary pain management including interventional procedures, physical modalities and other treatments.

Dr. Behr completed his medical degree at the University of Rochester in New York, his specialty training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at University of Washington prior to completing his pain management fellowship at UCLA in California.

Dr. Black was born and raised in Spartanburg, graduated from Spartanburg High School, Wake Forest University and Medical University of South Carolina.  She completed her orthopaedic training in Jacksonville, FL with additional training at the Mayo Clinic and Nemours Children’s Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. She then returned to Spartanburg with her husband and three children.

David Brown, MD

Dr. Brown is a fellowship-trained upper extremity surgeon, applying advanced techniques in both operative and non-operative conditions of the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder to minimize pain, while restoring function.

Dr. Brown completed his medical degree at the University of Massachusetts and his orthopedic surgery residency at Albany Medical Center in New York. Dr. Brown then completed his hand and upper extremity subspecialty training with the esteemed University of Pittsburgh Fellowship Program.

Michael Funderburk, MD

Dr. Funderburk completed his studies at the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina.  In his leisure time, he enjoys a good round of golf.

Anthony DiNicola, MD

Dr. DiNicola specializes in interventional pain management including the diagnosis, treatment and management of painful back, neck, joint, muscle and nerve conditions. He believes in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach for each patient’s care to maximize function and enhance the quality of life. He completed his undergraduate training at Virginia Tech and medical school training at West Virginia University. He completed his residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. He then completed a pain medicine fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. DiNicola loves spending his free time with his wife and two beautiful daughters, and he also enjoys tennis, college football and fishing.

Chi Lim, MD

As a fellowship trained spine specialist, Dr. Lim focuses on treating spine conditions, injuries and disorders utilizing  the newest operative and non-operative treatments available today.

Dr. Lim completed his medical degree at Wayne State University in Michigan, his orthopedic residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and completed a spine fellowship at the University of Wisconsin.

Michael Henderson, MD

Dr. Henderson is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with a fellowship specialty in adult foot and ankle surgery and reconstruction.  He also has extensive experience in hip and knee replacement. He has served as a team orthopaedist for Spartanburg High School since 1992.

Dr. Henderson was raised in Spartanburg and graduated from Spartanburg High School. He is a graduate of Wake Forest University and it’s School of Medicine.

Michael Hoenig, MD

After graduating from Wofford College and Emory University School of Medicine, Dr. Hoenig completed his orthopaedic residency at Northwestern University in Chicago, with a sports medicine and shoulder/elbow fellowship at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, NC.

His past affiliations include the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, Carolina Panthers NFL Football team, UNC-Charlotte, Davidson College Basketball teams and local high school football teams. He currently works with Limestone College, Spartanburg Methodist College, Byrnes High School, Dorman High School and Woodruff High School.

He is currently a faculty member of the Wake Forest Physician Assistant Program and Spartanburg Regional Family Medicine Residency Program.

David Mitchell, MD

Dr. Mitchell specializes in non-operating spine treatments, vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty and spine orthopaedics. He graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina and University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Dr. Mitchell completed his spine fellowship at the Indiana Spine Group in Indianapolis.  He is also an appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedics at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Dr. Mitchell has been evaluating spinal fractures in the office for years and was the first physician in South Carolina to perform kyphoplasty in the office setting for Medicare patients in 2012. If you have a painful vertebral fracture, kyphoplasty performed in an office setting is generally as safe as a hospital setting and significantly less expensive.

Dr. Mitchell is the co-author of a chapter in The Textbook of the Cervical Spine and is the published author of a peer-reviewed cervical spine paper. He has also received four patents on spine devices. He serves as one of the mentors for Wofford College students who are deciding on their career path in the medical field. The students are able to shadow various physicians both in the office and at the hospital to help them determine what field they want to pursue.

He is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg and his hobbies include antique radios, white-water rafting and science education.

Gerald Rollins, MD

Dr. Rollins started practicing orthopaedics in Spartanburg in 1982. He studied engineering at the University of Virginia and later received his medical degree from the University of Virginia. After a surgical internship at UNC Chapel Hill, he did a fellowship in rehabilitation at the University of Virginia. He then completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Virginia.

Christopher Chittum, MD

Dr. Chittum is the current chairman of the Division of Neurosurgery at Spartanburg Regional Hospital. He is a board-certified neurosurgeon who received his training at the Medical University of South Carolina under the tutelage of Sunil Patel, MD, chairman of Neurological Surgery. His neurosurgery training included seven full years of inclusive spinal treatments unlike "fellowship" trained spine surgeons who often only get one year of spine training.

He was the first surgeon to use robotic guidance for lumbar and thoracic spinal fusion in both North and South Carolina. He currently has used robotic guidance for this procedure more than any other surgeon in the Carolinas. He treats traumatic fractures, acute and degenerative disk problems and incorporates all non-surgical therapies as well to treat these conditions. He is trained in the use of artificial disk replacement for the cervical spine when indicated.

He operates at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, Mary Black Memorial and holds privileges at Pelham Hospital.

Phillip Esce, MD

Dr. Esce has been a physician serving the greater Spartanburg area since 2002. He is an active member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. Dr. Esce is board-certified through the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. He currently serves on the Neuro-oncology tumor board. He has served as past president of the South Carolina Spine Society.

Jeffrey Smith, MD

Timothy Monroe, MD

Dr. Monroe received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine (Cum Laude) in Washington, DC and completed his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in the department of neurosurgery. Dr. Monroe has privileges at Spartanburg Regional Medical System, Mary Black Health System and Pelham Hospital.
